I now just reflexively power on an 8bitdo controller and then tap right on the dpad right away to prevent/stop the ghosted input. The biggest known issue with 8bitdo controllers is that when you power one on that is paired to retropie it seems to receive ghosted left-dpad input until you press a button or direction on the controller.

Make sure you do not have any other controller drivers installed on retropie and that you do NOT enable the 8bitdo hack in controller drivers either (this was only for very old 8bitdo firmwares). In all cases it was with RPi3 and using the latest firmware version for the controllers. I have used both a single controller as well as two at once. I have personally used the now retired sn30 as well as the new sn30 pro.

They have no noticeable lag (but all bluetooth controllers probably introduce a frame or two of lag no matter what). I have never had one not sync up right away. I would swear by 8bitdo controllers on retropie and other systems.

Though if you need a controller for your PC or phone (I have a Moga controller for phone and Xbox One for PC), then it could server dual/triple purpose. With a price difference of $15 compared to $30-$50 a piece, I went with iBuffalo. Some question the build quality, others still have issues with ghost inputs or a stable connection. I have personally considered getting 8bitdo, but the consensus seems to say they're not perfect and aren't worth the price tag. Anyways, they're very light, and easy enough for me to throw in a bag to travel with, and have survived some decent physical punishment. It took a really hard hit, and was still functioning fine, but i could hear something loose inside, so I checked it out. The older one had an extra piece of solder come loose when a dog pulled my controller off a couch kind of violently (caught his leg as he was running by). The controllers are very easy to take apart and put back together if necessary. The newer one I received had some issue with the rubber piece inside, it just felt a little weird on the digital pad until I took it apart and put it back together. They're very much just plug and play, which is why I recommend them to everyone getting RetroPie. I had no issues with lag or ghosting, that some people have reported. I own both the older and newer iBuffalo controllers. My question is this, in 2018, which is the best SNES style controller for RetroPie?Īre the iBuffalos still the best or 8bitdo’s latest offerings?Īlso how is the input lag on them using Bluetooth? Would I bypass the lag if I ran the 8bitdo controller wired? What are people’s experiences with these?

Has something happened to the build quality recently?Īlso toying with the idea of getting one of the new 8bitdo SF30/SN30 Pro controllers as they seem very handy for other systems as well as RetroPie. But when I check the most recent reviews they seem less than impressive. I’ve noticed that iBuffalo/Buffalo currently have 2 different models on Amazon, an older model and a newer one. About to finally take the plunge and build a RetroPie setup this week and need some advice when it comes to controllers. I know this has probably been asked time and time again in the past but I’m a bit confused with selecting the best SNES style gamepad to use with RetroPie.
